This amazing rug sold for 2 x the high estimate – $10,000! That is $114 / sq ft. It’s worth every penny and more

Lot #466 in Doyle’s January 30th auction blew us both away last week. A 1920’s Chinese carpet, it is 10′ x 8’9″ (87.5 sq ft) and was estimated at $3000-$5000, $35-$57 / sq ft. Usually, a good antique carpet will get between $10 – $15 per sq.ft. Clearly this rug was not in that category. The sheen of the wool suggests high quality Mongolian wool. The some one got a very fine rug. The “faint stains, rewrapped selvedges” can be easily repaired.
