BOSTON, MA — What happens when you bring together a cutting edge designer from Louisiana transplanted to New England with the centuries-old South Asian tradition of hand knotted rugs and carpets?
Step into any of Dover Rug & Home’s three boutique outlets to find out — in Natick, downtown Boston or Burlington, Mass.
The latest addition to Dover Rug’s range of new, traditional and antique rugs and carpets is interior designer Eric Haydel’s contemporary collection titled ‘Carnival’. Already making waves, it is “all the rage in rugs”, says Boston Common magazine.
The Carnival collection draws upon the vibrancy of New Orleans where Haydel grew up, with designs steeped in the bold patterns and strong colors of the South. Into this heady cocktail, the designer swirls a pinch of sensibilities and sensitivities from the cooler climes of his adopted home in New England.
Haydel’s modern designs emerge from a sense of tradition and fun – the stylish striped Second Line, the beaded Masquerade, the abstract Streetcar, and more.
A world away in India and Nepal, master craftsmen translate the concepts into hand-knotted silk and wool rugs. It’s a small world, after all.
“We’re just the merchants, at the mercy of the weavers and kings,” quips Dover Rug CEO Mahmud Jafri. He sees his job as being to get the designer’s concepts and drawings rendered to reality, providing a product at a value that would not be possible in the United States.
The organic process caters to a discerning modern clientele’s specific needs. It builds bridges across cultures and time. And not least, it sustains an ancient art form, providing competitive livelihoods to artisans who would otherwise be forced into the drudgery of fields and factories.
The Jafris – Mahmud, now joined by his son Hasan, a recent college graduate — pride themselves on personalized service based on direct, inter-generational, links to weavers in India, Pakistan, and Nepal.
“Mahmud’s dream has resulted in the beauty and integrity that is Dover Rug & Home,” says Haydel, 31, who is also the president of the New England chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers.
